Why These Parents Designed An Eco-Friendly Baby Bottle

The non-toxic bottles are built to adapt and grow with babies as they develop, while also helping to keep  plastic out of landfills.

Single use plastic bottles can take up to 1,000 years to biodegrade. Even more concerning? About 714 million gallons of oil are used each year to make the bottles. Reusable bottles are a great step in the right direction, but it’s important to know what the bottles are made of and what makes them sustainable choices. For parents, things can get particularly tricky, since they often want something that is not only environmentally responsible, but also safe for their children.

Pura is a line of eco-friendly bottles that were designed by a mom and dad who were frustrated with the baby bottles on the market and decided to create a solution. The result was a completely plastic free design. Pura’s certified non-toxic bottles are made with just food grade stainless steel and medical grade silicone.

The stainless steel used is a fully recyclable and sanitary material which doesn’t leach potentially harmful materials, such as BPA or EA. Unlike aluminum, this material doesn’t need liners and won’t taste like metal. Pura polishes and sandblasts their products to be extra safe and ensure that contaminates don’t get trapped when they are used.

The medical grade silicone parts of the bottles are also eco-friendly, spill proof, and designed to be durable. Apart from the eco-friendly benefits, safety was a top focus for the founders. They chose to use silicone because it is made from the natural element silicon, which is hypoallergenic and can be chewed without releasing anything toxic. This material is also free of latex. Heating this material is also safe, so parents don’t have to worry when they warm up or wash the bottles.

From the baby bottle to travel lid, the line was created with efficiency in mind. The lids are designed so that people can “build their bottle” according to their needs, instead of buying a new bottle for specific uses. By building a product to last for a long time, less bottles need to purchased as children grow from infant to toddler. By keeping an “infant to grandfather” mindset, the modular lid system gives people the opportunity to try to avoid plastic throughout their lives.

Less specialized bottles also means a more cost effective option for parents and less outgrown products in landfills. Today, Pura is still operated by the same parents who designed the bottles and they hope to continue improving their products for parents and children everywhere.
