Three eco-conscious women from Austin came across a familiar predicament: they wanted a chic lifestyle, but also one that was good to the planet. They decided to create a solution, and before long, Blue Avocado was born. By offering beautifully designed sustainable products, such as reusable lunch totes and food storage accessories, they hoped to make an eco-friendly lifestyle not only attractive, but also practical.
As a result, the company focuses on finding creative solutions that are easy to incorporate into a customer's daily life. With this simple approach, Blue Avocado has partnered with designers like Lauren Conrad to tackle one major issue: the prevalence of single use items which ultimately end up in landfills.
Blue Avocado encourages people to reuse and creates products that are meant to last. If for some reason the product doesn't last, the company is dedicated to it’s Take Back Program. The program works in tandem with Blue Avocado’s partner, TerraCycle, who collects used products to make sure they can be reused in some way. By recycling the “non-recylable," TerraCycle collects almost any kind of waste in order to divert millions of pounds of waste from landfill every year.
Blue Avocado also encourages consumers to recycle. In the last eight years, Blue Avocado has worked with companies to turn about five million plastic bottles into Blue Avocado products. This is a huge step in the right direction, because right now, only 38 percent of bottles are recycled in the US.
As a certified B Corporation since 2013, Blue Avocado regularly meets high standards of social and environmental performance and transparency. Since the company is purpose driven, it has been able to redefine success in business. In the process, others have noticed the companies work and Blue Avocado scored the Green Good Design Award in 2015.
Blue Avocado has also been able to make a social impact by helping hundreds of entrepreneurs around the world. By partnering with companies like Whole Food’s Whole Planet Foundation, the company has been able to empower women and offer loans. Micro entrepreneurs tend to bring up the ones around them so this ripple effect is expected to continue to help others. By investing in over 500 women, the company has already helped over 2,200 other people so far.
Focused on everyday needs that can create waste, Blue Avocado naturally gravitated to (re)zips, a range of products that helps reduce the need for disposable bags. These zip lock alternatives are reusable and leakproof. The airtight features allows them to keep food fresh since it allows less oxygen to reach the food. Essentially, this also leads to less wasted or expired food. Blue Avocado makes an ongoing effort to only work with responsible materials and all (re)zip products are BPA and lead free. As part of their commitment to making an eco friendly lifestyle easier and more practical, the (re)zips can be written on with a marker and are dishwasher safe, making them super easy to reuse no matter your lifestyle.
