Dark Tomorrow night (March 27th) Earth Hour will commence at 8:30 pm. Earth Hour is a once a year “event” where everyone on earth is urged to turn off their lights for one hour. Why? The gesture is meant to send a message of solidarity for reducing our carbon emissions. If you’re wondering what do to with an hour of darkness, try one of these suggestions: 1. Play sardines. (One of my family’s favorite games!) To play Sardines, all the lights in the home are turned off. One person hides using a flashlight. Since darkness is on there side, they don’t have to hide that well. After a couple minutes, everyone else scatters and feels there way through the house trying to find the hider. When someone locates the hider, instead of revealing them, they quietly stand or lay close to them and hide along with them. The last person to find the group of hiders—now packed together like sardines--loses. Begin again with a new hider. 2. Star gaze. With, hopefully, an unusual number of lights out in your neighborhood or city, the stars, if out, will be easier to see. Bundle up, grab the binoculars--or telescope,-- and try to make out some of the shapes of the constellations. 3. Camp out. Move the family outdoors to the back yard for an evening. Light up the camp stove for some hot cocoa then retire to tents for stories and games played by flashlight. 4. Pamper yourself. With the house quiet and dark, take the hour to run a bath, light some candles, burn some incense and soak your stress away. 5. Listen to music. When was the last time you just listened to music with no distractions—just closed your eyes and let the music wash over you? Pick out your favorite album or playlist and immerse yourself in it. 6. Take a long walk. Grab the whole family, some flashlights and take a walk. Maybe for leisure or maybe to a destination like an ice cream parlor or a bookstore. Pick a business that has reduced there lighting for Earth Hour and tell them that’s why you chose to give them your business. |
